I wanted to have bitter melon egg drop soup for a while now and today I have the opportunity to do so. I bought a bitter gourd for £3.80 last week when I was doing groceries shopping from the Asian supermarket. Yesterday I noticed that I have to eat it today for if not it will spoil. Luckily for me the hubby doesn’t mind bitter gourd at all.
I still remember the first time I cooked this 2 decades ago and when asked if it was all right for him, his replied was “I drink Guinness, and this is nothing” Happy wife! Since then, he had had been eating many types of bitter gourds recipe because it is supposedly good for the diabetic wife.
How do you make your bitter melon soup? I am sure there are many styles, but this is mine. Basic ingredients are chicken stock, dried scallops, goji berries, glass noodles, bitter gourds, eggs, few slices of ginger and seasoning – freshly ground salt & pepper
I will try it when I get hold of some bitter gourd. I love bitter gourd too. Have you tried adding slices of white fish fillet to bitter gourd egg drop soup? It’s very nice. My Japanese grandmother used to cook it with slices of white fish fillet using the traditional small Okinawan bitter gourd.
Below is a link to an NHK programme about bitter gourd (goya in Japanese).

Oh thank you Cheng. I will definitely try with fish as I am off to Devon next week and I always come back with a car boot load of seafood.
